Ubiquiti Introduces UniFi 5G Backup

Ubiquiti has announced UniFi 5G Backup, a compact cellular backup device designed to add 5G failover to existing UniFi gateways without replacing the gateway itself.

The device connects through a standard PoE port, can be adopted into the UniFi environment, and is designed for flexible placement so the antenna can be positioned where mobile signal is strongest.

Why It Matters

For smaller sites, shops, offices, and premises that rely on card machines, cloud software, CCTV, or remote support, a secondary WAN path can remove a single point of failure. A carrier-unlocked 5G option also gives businesses more flexibility when choosing a provider and data plan.

The practical planning question is not just whether 5G is available. It is where the unit should be mounted, what traffic should fail over, how alerts should work, and whether the backup path is suitable for voice, payment, camera, or VPN traffic.
